Hallo,

Produktion: 2,512 Mio tonnen Stahl
Umsatz: 1,326 Bio Won
Operativer Profit: 0,312 Bio Won

POSCO records highest ever performance results for 2003

January 14, 2004

- Sales and net profits for 2003 recorded at 14.36 trillion KRW and 1.98 trillion KRW, respectively

POSCO has achieved record-breaking performance results for 2003, recording annual sales of 14.36 trillion won (12.16 billion USD), operating profits of 3.06 trillion won (2.59 billion USD) and net profits of 1.98 trillion KRW (1.68 billion USD).

POSCO presented its 2003 performance results at the CEO Forum, held at the Korea Stock Exchange on January 14, 2004. The company’s sales for 2003 showed a 22% increase on the previous year, and operating profits and net profits rose by a respective 67% and 80%.

In particular, an increase of 3.3% in POSCO’s equity ratio, from 67.1% in 2002 to 70.4% and a 7.1% decline in debt ratio, from 49.1% in 2002 to 42.0%, demonstrate the company’s strengthened financial structure.

POSCO’s operating profit ratio, an indicator of the company’s profitability, stood at 21.3%. This is an impressive figure when compared against the single-digit ratios of global European and Japanese steelmaking companies with larger production volumes than POSCO.

POSCO’s superb 2003 performance results are partially attributed to the recovery of steel prices, which were influenced by the favorable conditions facing local and international steel consuming industries, such as those emerging in China. Also contributing to these excellent results was the sharp increase in POSCO’s sales of strategic value-added products, such as automotive steel sheet and electrical steel sheet. On top of this, the company’s efforts to achieve successful managerial innovation through Six-Sigma activities and Process Innovation (PI) improved productivity and significantly decreased expenses. The company’s PI activities have been targeted at maximizing managerial efficiency in all areas, such as production, purchasing and sales, by integrating IT with conventional steel industry processes.

- In a bid to boost investment value, POSCO expects a 2004 payout ratio of 25% and dividends 120% of the par value

As POSCO announced that it would maintain its 2003 payout ratio of 25% for 2004, dividends are expected to increase by 71.4% to reach 6,000 KRW per share (5 USD) or 120% of the par value. This includes the previous mid-term dividend of 1,000 won per share (0.847 USD).

Due to this policy, share prices soared by 38.1% since the beginning of 2003, a rise that was well above the average increase of 27.6% in the KOSPI.

-POSCO expects sales to increase by 17.5% to reach 16.88 trillion KRW (14.29 billion USD) and operating profits to reach 3.18 trillion KRW (2.69 billion USD) in 2004, without additional facility expansion

In 2004, POSCO plans to achieve 16.88 trillion KRW (14.29 billion USD) in sales, up 17.5% on last year. The company also plans to achieve operating profits of 3.18 trillion KRW (2.69 billion USD), an intended increase of 3.9% on 2003. POSCO has resolved to use its ‘Stretch Target’ strategy to achieve these goals and bring the best results to its customers, shareholders and employees without additional facility construction. Crude steel production will also increase to 29.3 million tons this year, up 1.4% on last year.

While raw material prices and shipping fees are expected to drastically increase because of a worldwide imbalance in the supply and demand of raw materials, POSCO has increased its 2004 sales goals considerably, demonstrating its determination to achieve the highest results this year by cutting costs, improving productivity, and increasing sales of value added products.

-Will be positioned as a global blue-chip company by investing 13.5 trillion KRW over the next five years; by securing growth engines; by strengthening competitiveness and continuing innovation in management

By 2008, POSCO will invest a total of 13.5 trillion KRW (11.44 billion USD), including 10.7 trillion KRW in the domestic steel sector (9.06 billion USD); 2.1 trillion KRW in the international steel sector (1.79 billion US dollars); and 0.76 billion KRW in other sectors (0.57 billion USD).

Resulting from these investment activities, according to its mid-term management strategies, POSCO plans to expand its production capacity, strengthening its growth basis for the future. The company has also resolved to promote the development of value-added products, in particular automotive steel; API steel; the STS 400 series; and electrical steel. POSCO expects to reach global leadership thanks to the company’s innovative technology, including the use of FINEX (a next-generation ironmaking process) and Strip Casting (an innovative technology of directly rolling steel without making slabs). The company will also maintain its efforts in management innovation, strengthening ethical management and establishing Six-Sigma in its corporate culture to create a ‘desirable corporation’.

-Plans to achieve domestic crude steel production of 32 million tons by commercializing POSCO’s unique steelmaking technology that is drawing world attention

POSCO will invest a total of 10.7 trillion KRW (9.06 billion USD) in the Korean steel industry and will increase crude steel production capacity to 32 million tons by 2008.

With the completion last year of a stainless steel plant with a production capacity of 600,000 tons, POSCO expects to produce 29 million tons of steel this year. With furnace revamping scheduled for completion by 2007, expansion of the existing FINEX demo plant and the construction of additional FINEX demo plants, POSCO expects to secure an additional three million tons of crude steel capacity. FINEX, POSCO’s unique, innovative ironmaking technology, is drawing a great deal of attention from the international steel industry. POSCO will also continue to maintain the competitiveness of its existing facilities through persistent revamping and regular maintenance. At the same time, the company will focus on maximizing the worth of its products by increasing sales of valued added products.

When POSCO achieves a domestic crude steel production capacity of 32 million tons, it will begin to ease the current shortage of slab and hot rolled steel in Korea.

Meanwhile, POSCO has unveiled plans to expand its overseas production base to 10 million tons of steel within the decade. The company will choose a new production site, most likely in China, India or another Southeast Asian country. Future facilities are scheduled to adopt the, currently under development, FINEX process. On top of this, POSCO has resolved to actively invest in countries that possess the raw materials, such as iron ore and coal, necessary for steel production.

During the CEO Forum, POSCO’s Chairman & CEO, Ku-Taek Lee, personally responded to questions posed by shareholders and media representatives and explained the company’s management status. Lee stressed that with POSCO’s 35 years of know-how and strength, the company will be dedicated to opening a new era of growth and innovation. He also expressed POSCO’s determination to excel in global competition and to be a reputable company that is publicly trusted and respected; ‘a strong company never slackening the reigns of challenge.’

letzten Jahren gebaut, was die Basis

Posco plant (Meldung vom 14.01.04)
den operativen Profit in 2004 um 3,9 % zu steigern,
wohlgemerkt ohne zusätzliche Produktion (Zitat:
"without additional facility expansion").

erwirtschaftet. Die Marge liegt also
im Januar bei etwas über 30%. Das ist doch
ganz anständig.

Gute Zahlen von Posco. Der operative Gewinn soll
in 2004 auf 3,7 Bio Won steigen. Bisherige Schätzung:
3,2 Bio Won.

Hier die Meldung

Posco kaufenswert
Focus Money

trick17 - Freitag, 25. März 2005 - 20:08
Posco hat in 2004 sehr viel Cash produziert.
Gewinn pro Aktie: 47.000 Won, aktueller
Kurs 220.000 Won.

Zum 1. April werden die Preise angehoben,
was die höheren Rohstoffpreise kompensiert.

Dieses Jahr dürfte ähnlich gut laufen wie 2004.
Aktuell kauft Posco 2% der Aktien zurück.

Trotz Aktienrückkäufe in den letzten Jahr
und stetig steigenden Dividenden und
zudem massiven Investitionen ist es Posco
gelungen die Verschuldung in eine
Netto-Cash-Position zu wandeln.
